Holland Club Report
1 February 2001
Scuttlebutt from the After Battery
Ancient (Sub) Mariners Report (#3)

Since the appearance of the Holland Club page on our USSVI website I have received numerous compliments and I would like to acknowledge all who have contacted me, Thanks for the kind words.

Since many of our Holland Club members are not on the Internet I would appreciate if those who are, would pass the word on to your fellow base members who are also Holland Club members, of the existence of the Holland Club Page. Printout a copy and take it to your next base meeting. Help pass the word shipmate.

I have had the pleasure of processing 29 more applications for membership and have forwarded their Holland Club packets to their respective Base Commanders. Certificates, membership Cards, and Holland Club patches will be presented to the new members with a welcome aboard letter on behalf of our National Commander and myself as Holland Club Commander.

I would appreciate if all Base commanders would cycle through your Base records and if you find a member who is eligible. Please submit their name. A member who is eligible should not have to ASK to be recognized his shipmates should be eager and willing to recognize him for his achievement.

Unfortunately I have to report that I quite frequently receive notice of Holland Club members departing on their final patrol. I have made arrangements with the USSVI National Chaplain to keep me informed of this. Names of these Holland Club members will appear in the Final Patrol report in the American Submariner. I have requested that their names be retained on Holland Club Roster as part of our history.

The most frequently asked questions I receive are concerning eligibility for and the proper procedure to use in applying for membership.

It's worth repeating:

Holland Club membership procedure:

Membership application...

1.  ...must be verified for eligibility by member's Base Commander

2.  ...then is submitted by Base Commander to the NJVC.

Holland Club membership requirements:

1.  Member is in good standing

2.  Member is qualified 50 or more years.  All WWII Qualified meet this.

and

3a.  If a USSVI LIFE MEMBER then must be a member for ONE year.

Or

3b.  Be a REGULAR USSVI MEMBER for FIVE consecutive years

Members at Large (MALs) All requirements are same as above.

With the exception that:
MAL'S shall SUBMIT APPLICATIONS for membership DIRECTLY to NJVC for verification and processing.

The following is a partial excerpt from a press release by Tri State Base. Concerning Holland Club and one of our most prestigious members immediate Past Holland Club Commander Glenn Hill. I Quote.

The Holland Club is an entity of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSV), a national organization of Submarine Veterans open for membership to any Submariner that has Qualified in Submarines.

The Holland Club is open to members that are already members of USSV and have been qualified in Submarines for 50 years or more.

The Holland Club is so named because the USS Holland was the first submarine accepted by the US Navy on April 11 1900 as part of the United States' arsenal.

Glenn Hill, Commander USNR (Ret) was appointed as Holland club Commander in January 1998. Glenn is a charter member of Tri State Base; Waynesboro Pa. which was chartered on 25 April 1992.

Glenn accepted the appointment when membership in the Holland Club numbered 127. Glenn was elected Holland Club Commander in September 1998. Under Glenn leadership membership has reached over 750.

Glenn was relived (due to health) in October 2000. William Britt MTCS (SS) USN Ret. Requin Base was elected to succeed Cdr. Hill at the National convention in Atlantic City. John Dempster NJ South was elected as Vice Cdr. (the complete article on Glenn Hill and the Lone Sailor award presented to him from Holland Club can be found in the Base news section of this Website under Tri-State Base)

Holland Club has been ably assisted in the past by shipmates Owen Williams and Pete Amunrud, Holland Club owes these two gentlemen many thanks and looks forward to their support in the year ahead and many more to come. Thank you shipmates your help is appreciated.

See you all in Peoria at the Holland Club Breakfast get together.

Respectfully

Pride Runs Deep

Bill Britt Holland Club Commander
