"Speed" Graubart
While he was at the Naval Academy, one of the men on the track team got hurt so they asked him to run in his place. Even though he crossed the finish line about a half lap behind everyone else, he still won 1 point for his team so they nicknamed him "Speed" and it stuck with him ever since. Upon graduation he reported to the USS CINCINNATI CL-6 where he served for 3 years. In 1928 Capt. Graubart reported to the Officers Submarine School in New London, Ct. After graduating from Sub School, he reported to the USS R-2/SS-79 where he served from 1928-1931. It was aboard the USS R-2 that he became "Qualified in Submarines". Capt. Graubart was married on 13 September 1931 at the Naval Academy Chapel to Lucille Cheever to whom he was married for 63 years. He then reported to the USS BARRACUDA SS-163 where he served from 1932-1935. His next assignment was to the USS PORPOISE SS-172 where he served from 1938-1940.
From 1945-1946 he was the Commanding Officer of the USS PRINZ EUGEN IXV-300. The PRINZ EUGEN was a German heavy cruiser that was taken over by the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII. The PRINZ EUGEN was used in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini in 1946. From 1951-1952, Capt. Graubart was the Commanding Officer of the USS TACONIC AGC-17. Capt. Graubart retired from the Navy in 1955 and then had his own Consulting Firm in Germany for 12 years where he was a Consultant on military hardware. He retired to Palm Beach, Florida in 1968 where he lived ever since. Captain Graubart went on "Eternal Patrol" the week of 4 August 2003 at his home in Palm Beach, Fl.
