5 June 2002

On Memorial Day in Galveston, I participated in the service at the USS CAVALLA.

The Tolling Of The Boats was done by WWII SubVets. They have designed a beautiful ceremony and part of that ceremony includes the display of 53 flags with the names of the lost boats and plaques with the crew list from their histories and a 53rd flag for other losses. They do toll the bell for the USS SCORPION and USS THRESHER in their ceremony.

For the Memorial Weekend, the Cavalla Historical Foundation, has gotten the Galveston Park Board to open the Naval Display of the USS CAVALLA and USS STEWART to the public at no charge. This provided a great opportunity for families with children to come and visit.

During the weekend, the Cavalla Volunteers arranged the flags and information material so that it was available for the whole weekend.

It was amazing to watch as the visitors went down the line and read the plaques and spent time absorbing this information about the Boats On Eternal Patrol.

The picture above shows the CAVALLA and the display.

It is indeed a welcome sight to see CAVALLA serving once again as a remembrance of the boats and men still on Eternal Patrol.

May we always remember and never forget.
