Subject:  Campaign to promote Slade Cutter

Ron Williams suggested I send a copy of this e-mail to USSVI and ask for your assistance in passing the word to US Submarine Vets via the website to support the Resolution (attached) and contact their Senators in support of this request to get this belated promotion for Slade Cutter.

Gentlemen:

In the recently released biography Slade Cutter, Submarine Warrior by Carl LaVO, the many exploits and accomplishments of Captain Cutter are graphically and vividly captured. What is also apparent, is the grave injustice that was done to this very fine gentleman.

The Northern Virginia Chapter of United States Submarine Veterans recently passed, by unanimous vote, a Resolution urging the United States Senate to take belated action and confer, via special legislation or other appropriate measure, the rank of Rear Admiral upon Slade Cutter.

Since such action would require a departure from normal promotion protocols, the success of such a request will in large measure depend upon support (or opposition) that comes from the Navy.

The attached copy of the Resolution merely gives a "snap shot" of Slade Cutter's many acts of valor in the defense of his country. It does not begin to capture the totality of this fine gentleman's life and the many contributions he has made. It also does not chronicle the history of how one adverse fitness report, prepared by a bitter and disgraced superior, during WWII, laid the ground work for blocking Slade Cutter's promotion to Rear Admiral.

Captain Cutter is now 92 years old. If our nation is to confer this promotion upon Slade Cutter, then time is of the essence.

We respectfully request your help and assistance in getting this promotion acted upon by the United States Senate by attempting to secure support for this action within the Navy Department, as well as conveying your support to the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Warner, along with the ranking member, Senator Levin, as well as other member of the Committee - especially, Senator McCain.

Attached, for your background, are copies of correspondence that have been delivered to the offices of Senators Warner and McCain, along with a list of the members of the Armed Services Committee.

Should you require further information pertaining to this request please do not hesitate to contact me.

Very respectfully,

Ross L. Sargent
