VA Grant Goes to South Carolina State Veterans Home

WASHINGTON (April 23, 2004) - Veterans in South Carolina will have access to 220 beds in a nursing home and 60 beds in a domiciliary for long-term rehabilitative services, thanks to a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to the South Carolina State Veterans Home in Walterboro.

"This grant reflects the federal-state partnership that is honoring our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. "This partnership provides a comfortable home for veterans in a time of great personal need."

The $18.5 million grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to construct a new nursing home for veterans. The overall cost of the project is approximately $28.5 million.

In fiscal year 2002, VA spent nearly $908 million in South Carolina to serve over 415,000 state veterans. VA operates major medical centers in Charleston and Columbia with combined inpatient admissions of over 8,000 annually and more than 741,000 outpatient visits per year.

Information about the South Carolina veterans home and other state benefits for veterans can be found on the Web at http://www.govoepp.state.sc.us/vabenef.htm or by calling 803-734-0200.
