ITEM-02 .... NATIONAL COMMANDERS AWARD HAS A NEW NAME
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Submitted by:
John Peters petersj007@hawaii.rr.com
===================================================================
January 13, 2003: Following the National Board of Directors vote, the
AYES have it and the National Commanders Award has a new name. The
Robert Link National Commanders Award. The winner is selected by the
current NC and this award will honor the memory of our FIRST National
Commander, Bob Link.
The Robert Link National Commanders Award.
This is our (USSVI) version of a “Letter of Commendation.” The
nomination, selection, and presentation of this award is solely the
National Commanders’ discretion and it is awarded to an individual
Member, Base or Group for special recognition by the National
Commander.
WHO WAS BOB LINK?
Bob Link was one of the guys who was on the ground floor of
establishing SV WWII in 1955, and was the Second National Commander.
Later on in 1962 - 1964, he was very heavily involved with getting
USSVI started. He and Joe Negri worked side by side, and they did just
as much to start this organization. Bob probably did more in starting
the organization than Joe did simply because Joe was deployed to the
Med for most of the late part of 1963, and Early 1964 while USSVI was
getting started. But if you read the USSVI history, there is very
little mention of Bob Link from Abescon NJ. But because of this guy
two great organizations were formed to remember other Submarine heroes
from WWII and the past.
But unfortunately Bob was from NJ and not CT. Bob didn't persuade the
membership to buy a club house that was later named for him like Joe
did. Bob Link basically faded into oblivion, because no one really
made an effort to keep his spirit alive. No body treated him like a
hero like Joe Negri was.
Until today, there was no Bob Link Award in USSVI but now we will keep
his memory alive through The Robert Link National Commanders Award,
just as we do for Joe Negri.
Thank the Groton Base CDR John "Gumba" Carcioppolo for reminding us of
Bob Link's contribution to starting USSVI.
Aloha
John D. Peters
TRICARE & MEDICARE NEWS Section in the Retired Affairs Web Site at:
Also, to make it easier for web site visitors to locate items of
interest, articles have been grouped in sections under the titles...
When you enter the web site sections you can click on the topic listed
ITEM-10 .... LATEST INFORMATION ON RENO CONVENTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Submitted by:
Don Brown donbrownss322@sbcglobal.net
===================================================================
January 17, 2003
From: DONALD F BROWN
Subject: RENO 2003

This is the latest information concerning the Joint National
Convention to be held in Reno, NV September 2 - 5, 2003.

The host base for USSVI is CORVINA Base in Reno, with Don Brown as
Co-chairman.

The host chapter for USSVWWII is Las Vegas Chapter, with Paul Dornberg
as Co-chairman.

The convention has 1300 rooms blocked off at the Reno Hilton (host
hotel) and as of this date, over two-thirds have been reserved, so
don't procrastinate.

We are approaching 45 boat reunions, which I believe is a record or
close to it. I am sure that other boats are planning reunions that
haven't been posted to this site.

For your convenience, all of the convention functions (with the
exception of the golf outing) will be held at the host hotel.

As the old song goes, "See You In September"

Don

The Awards Committee has started the search for the nomination and
selection of those members of USSVI whose contributions to our
organization are deserving of special recognition.

We need your help.

It is always difficult to select that one certain member out of the
many who each year does so much for our organization.

Last year we had a large group nominated in all categories with many
deserving to be nominated again this year.

I request the help and cooperation of "all hands" in assisting our
District Commanders by bringing to the attention of the awards
committee the outstanding members from your base the opportunity to be
recognized at the National level.

My brother my hero E.T. Johnny Johnson retired Senior Chief
Torpedoman, who is one of your members is going to be 80 in April.

His children will have a suprise, I said suprise birthday party for
Him and have need to build a facsimile of the BUMPER SS-333.

I got to thinking maybe the Subvets had a parade float somewhere
around the country that I could haul to Bellingham WA and then return
it wherever.

I realize this is a crazy request but thought I would try before
building one

Thanks

Submitted by:
Sid Harrison webmaster@ussvi.org
===================================================================
RE: All that info in the USSVI SUBMARINE MEMORIAL LOCATOR FILE
http://www.ussvi.org/mem/submem.htm

From time to time I receive notices about changes to USSVI MEMORIAL
sites.

Often the info pertains to some changes which is old news (except in
the website)

I would suggest that with the many bases located around the country
that y'all occasionally check the Memorial sites that are listed
within your geographic areas and see if the data presented in the
"LOCATOR FILE" (linked above) is as up-to-date as possible. What has
changed? What has been added or removed? - or just moved? Also if you
find additional history about the site such, as who put it there? and
when?

And don't forget to verify location/contact info such as the ADDRESS,
PHONE NUMBERS etc. This includes ALL types of memorial sites from that
plaque-on-a-wall or torpedo-on-a-rock to that memorial bench, ball
park, pier or building. Whatever is out there.

The intent of the SUBMARINE MEMORIAL LOCATOR FILE is to... well... to
LOCATE. And we want the info provided to do a credible job of that ---
to provide the latest and most reliable location information that we
can.

Whatever you find, send it to   webmaster@ussvi.org
