A NEWS ARTICLE - RE: CONVENTION 2004 =================================================================== Submitted by: John Carcioppolo gumba700@comcast.net =================================================================== The link below takes you to a newspaper article in a Saratoga newspaper. It really shows the efforts the Alb-Saratoga base is putting forward for the preps for the 2004 convention. Good info to share w/ the membership in general. VA NEWS RELEASE =================================================================== Submitted by: John Dudas johnpd@vipweb.net =================================================================== Gulf War Service-ALS Link Confirmed A recent scientific study published in the Sept. 23 issue of the scientific journal Neurology supports a 22-month policy by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to recognize amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) among veterans of the Gulf War as a service-connected illness. The study found that veterans who were deployed to the combat theater during the Gulf War were nearly twice as likely to develop the disease as veterans not deployed to the Gulf, accounting for 40 of the 107 cases identified among military personnel. For information regarding ALS call 1-877-DIAL-ALS (1-877-342-5257) or e-mail ALS@med.va.gov. =================================================================== ITEM-05 .... NEW HEALTHCARE INFO =================================================================== Submitted by: John Dudas johnpd@vipweb.net =================================================================== House Committee Allows Deductions for Health Care The House Government Reform Committee passed a bill last week that would allow active and retired military servicemembers to pay health care premiums in pre-tax dollars. The bill (H.R. 1231) would amend the U.S. tax code to allow military retirees to pay into the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program on a pretax basis and allow active duty military personnel to apply a deduction for supplemental payments for TRICARE-the military's healthcare plan. As a tax bill, H.R. 1231 must still go before the House Ways and Means Committee, where representatives are reportedly leery of the bill's price tag. For more information regarding H.R. 1231, =================================================================== ITEM-06 .... WEBSITE HOUSEKEEPING TIME =================================================================== Submitted by: Sid Harrison webmaster@ussvi.org =================================================================== I would ask that anyone who has been an initiator of material in the USSVI website to take a look at that material and send me your list of items to be deleted or placed into the "KEEPERS FILE". And what kind of stuff would that be? ...Documents (PDF and MS/WORD) in the documents section http://www.ussvi.org/cb.htm ...News items that are now "old news" http://www.ussvi.org/basenews.htm ...Reports & Notices that have been overcome by time and events http://www.ussvi.org/notices.htm Procedures & Guidelines http://www.ussvi.org/procedur.htm ----------- A word about the KEEPERS. http://www.ussvi.org/keepers.htm This section is a kind of archive for former NEWS ITEMS or NOTICES & REPORTS. Most of the items (but not all) that were placed there were initially done so based upon my calibrated eyeball (aka my own judgment call). I selected items that (in my opinion) had long-term usefulness either because they may serve as "how-to" examples or because they still apply to current conditions and circumstances. ------------ No great rush on this, but now that the '03 Convention is wrapped up and the latest election is over, it seems like a proper time to delete or re-locate some stuff. Sid ---------- NOTE: No... I do not go back and "update" past BROADCASTS. They are kinda like your library archived newspapers. They are ARCHIVED and they are what they are. So please don't ask. I am considering dumping all BROADCASTS that are older than three years. =================================================================== ITEM-07 .... SID'S BROADCASTS FORMAT SURVEY =================================================================== Submitted by: Sid Harrison webmaster@ussvi.org =================================================================== I received nearly 70 responses. About a third asked that the current e-mail format for BROADCASTS be retained. (It's what you are reading now) So be it. Thanks for all your inputs. I'll ask again next year.
