ITEM-02 .... USS OKLAHOMA CITY BASE LAUNCHED ON 27 APRIL 2004
===================================================================
SUBMITTED BY:
ART RANDALL    ArtRandall@aol.com
===================================================================
Shipmates of USSVI:

It is my sincere pleasure to announce that the newest Base in the
growing family of Central Region Bases, USS Oklahoma City Base was
formally launched on the 27th of April 2004 with 18 founding members.

The elected officers of the new Base are:

    COMMANDER/POC
    Jim Whitten
    820 NW 38th St.
    Oklahoma City, OK 73110
    (405) 528-3997
    js82038@aol.com

    VICE COMMANDER
    James "J.B." Messer
    10101 Morning Glory Dr.
    Norman, OK 73026
    (405) 364-6138
    jmesser@okccc.edu

    SECRETARY
    William "Bill" Novak
    9500 S. Anderson Rd.
    Oklahoma City, OK 73165
    (405) 794-7121
    bnovak@gbrproperties.com

    TREASURER
    Larry Ziegler
    2704 N.W. 69th St.
    Oklahoma City, OK 73116
    (405) 286-3508
    lzieg@hotmail.com

Sam Bowman, Oklahoma City Vice Mayor and City Councilman on behalf of
the Mayor and the City Council, welcomed the new Base as a very
positive contribution to the City's USS Oklahoma City portfolio of
programs and activities and looked forwarded to working with the Base
in the future.

Also attending was Dr. Ann Ackerman, VP Economic and Community
Development for Oklahoma City Community College, where the launching
took place. She was active in the commissioning of the USS Oklahoma
City (SSN 723) and has remained so in all subsequent officer and crew
related city activities since, developing an ongoing program and
active relationship between the submarine and its namesake City
Committee. Ann stated, "We look forward to the members of the your
new Base becoming active participants, playing a significant role in
the City's "USS Oklahoma Committee!" Both were presented framed
"Honorary Plank Owner" Certificates to commemorate the occasion and
their contribution.

The USS Oklahoma City Base also proudly joins its Sister Base
(Batfish) in Muskogee, home of War Memorial Park
http://ussvi.org/mem/state-o2.htm ) featuring the USS BATFISH SS-310
Museum and the Memorial to the Oklahoma SubVets of WWII adopted WWII
submarine, USS SHARK I, as the State's second USSVI Base.

The two Bases have an opportunity to bring a new dimension, to and for
the citizens and submarine veterans of the State of Oklahoma, as few
USSVI Bases can. The Batfish Base represents and shares a link to the
past in its tribute to the Diesel Boat era and the USS Oklahoma City
Base, shares the present with a link to a glimpse of the future in its
tribute to an operating nuclear Fast Attack submarine.

Although separated by 150 miles, these two Bases working
synergistically together have a unique opportunity to make a
significant and mutually beneficial contribution to the public
awareness of what the US Submarine Service has done and is doing and
will be doing for our nation in the future, not only in Oklahoma, but
through the eyes of its visitors, the US and world as well. Please
welcome the USS Oklahoma City Base as the US SubVets' newest Base.

Art Randall
Director Central Region

ITEM-05 .... AMERICAN SUBMARINER BOAT SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM
===================================================================
SUBMITTED BY:
PAT HOUSEHOLDER    NATSEC@comcast.net
===================================================================
30 Apr 2004

The program is lagging this year and needs your Base's active support.
Out of 180 total sponsorships last year only 53 have renewed so far
this year. Please have your base support this worthwhile program.

=======

PURPOSE: To make the active duty submarine force member aware of
USSVI and provide them with information about our activities through
sponsorship of AMERICAN SUBMARINER to the various Submarine related
organizations. After all, these force members represent the future
core membership of USSVI.

GOAL: Have (at least) one sponsorship for each Submarine Activity. A
sponsorship is defined as 3 American Submariner magazine copies per
issue for one year.

PROGRAM: USSVI Bases OR individual members are solicited to become
sponsors of each Fast Attack Submarine and/or for each crew of the
Boomers. (You can also sponsor both crews if you wish.) The
Commanding Officer of the unit sponsored receives a letter informing
him of your sponsorship.

I will also accept additional sponsors for any Boat or Crew, (this
would send 6 copies of each issue instead of the three, etc). The
additional sponsor(s) will receive the same recognition as the first
sponsor.

You can also sponsor any Sub Base, Sub Group, Veterans Hospital or
Veterans Home or even an individual person you wish to sponsor.

Currently needed are sponsors for many of the Submarine
Squadrons/Commands/Tenders, ROTC, JROTC, and training schools. (Call
(985) 863-1408 or e-mail me GILSS310@bellsouth.net for those units
needing sponsors.)

Example, you could sponsor a Submarine Squadron, Base, Recruiting
Office, Navy Home. Navy Hospital, Navy Detachment, or even a friend.
The options are open. (Since all of these locations may not need 3
copies of A/S you may sponsor this type of location for the following
rates.)

    Any U.S. Submarine 3 copies per issue/1 yr $25

Any other unit sponsorship 3 copies per issue/1 yr $25

For small groups 2 copies per issue/1 yr $20

For individuals 1 copy per issue/1 yr $12

HOW TO SPONSOR: Send Dennis "GIL" Gilbert your SPONSORSHIP request.

You can designate a Submarine, Boomer Crew, sub related command, etc.
or allow 'Gil' to select one on your behalf. (If you have the name of
the CO or OIC of your sponsorship choice, Gil can make the letter more
personal). If you know the complete address of the sponsored unit,
please include it.

Make your Base or individual check(s) out to "USSVI/BSP" and send it
along with your SPONSORSHIP request to:

    Dennis "GIL" Gilbert
    Mgr. USSVI Boat Sponsorship Program
    1053 Murray Road Loop.
    Pearl River, La.70452-5665

'GIL' will send a letter to the Boat / Command / Location sponsored,
informing them they have been sponsored to receive ('x') copies of our
USSVI National Magazine "The American Submariner" for a year, by
sponsor (Your Name or Base). As sponsor, you will also receive a copy
of this letter.

For more specific information, contact Dennis "GIL" Gilbert at (985)
863-1408 or via E-Mail: GILSS310@bellsouth.net

===============

Shipmates, This is an opportunity to do something we all seem to be
saying, Let Submariners and interested people know we exist, and what
we are doing. This is a great recruiting tool!

Thanks for your past and future support.
