BREMERTON BASE MEM-DAY OBSERVANCE =================================================================== SUBMITTED BY: DON BASSLER up-scope@wavecable.com =================================================================== May 28, 2004 U.S. Naval Submarine Base, Bangor, WA Memorial Day Observance At the invitation of Commander Submarine Group Nine Bangor, United States Submarine Veterans' Bremerton Base conducted the Tolling of the Boats ceremony at CSG9's annual Memorial Day Observance. Many active duty as well as retired submarine veterans were present. At 10:30, under cover near Deterrent Park, Master of Ceremonies and CSG9 Chief of Staff Capt Dave Thomas commenced the observance with a short commentary highlighted with the words of Richard "Killer" O'Kane detailing the sinking of the Tang by its own malfunctioning torpedo. Emotional to say the least. The Tolling of the Boats ceremony was conducted by four members of the Bremerton Subvets. Their submarine service spans from World War II to the present day. Bremerton Base Member and CSG9 Command Master Chief Ron Johnson read the list of US submarines lost. The following base members struck the ship's bell for each boat. They were: Retired Lieutenant Commander Bill Hipp who joined the Navy before the "BIG ONE", and performed war patrols on USS Flounder (SS-251) in 1944 and 1945 and served aboard submarines until well after the end of the Korean War; Retired Chief Warrant Officer Tommy Robinson who served in diesel submarines, fast attacks and boomers in the 60s and 70s during the Cold War. And last but not least, Master Chief Walt Harvey who has served on several fast attacks and boomers in the Cold War and Gulf War eras. These four gentleman span at least three generations of submariners and well represented the membership of the United States Submarine Veterans. Q & A ABOUT ONGOING BASE MEMBER STATUS =================================================================== SUBMITTED BY: PATRICK HOUSEHOLDER NATSEC@comcast.net =================================================================== A good question was raised by a Base Commander about ongoing Base member status. The question: "If a member is current with National dues (Life/Reg/Assoc) BUT they are not current with their respective base dues are they still required to be carried (as a local member) by the base?" The answer: Those members no longer current with your base BUT still current nationally, revert to MAL status. The National Office is unaware of their change in status unless you tell them, and they DO need to know. Please have your base record keepers notify the national office of those members reverting to MAL status due to non payment of local dues. PELICAN HARBOR BASE MAKES A "CLEAN SWEEP" =================================================================== SUBMITTED BY: BILL VASQUEZ vasquezw@bellsouth.net =================================================================== Our Pelican Harbor Base (Miami, Florida), which has only existed for 16 months, made a "Clean Sweep" of it's Memorial Day Activities. Through the efforts of several members (the base has grown to 30+ members), Pelican Harbor Base helped organize and participated in all of the following commemorations: 1. A Memorial Day service and celebration held at Lauderdale Memorial Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Members of the Pelican Harbor Base participated in the Motorcycle Parade, the Parade of Colors, and most importantly, we presented our "Tolling of the Boats" as the closing segment of the service. This was the first time such a recognition of Submarine Veterans was held in South Florida. 2. A picnic and recognition of veterans sponsored by the Allied Veterans Association in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The commemoration was held at the Alexander Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Mr. Reginald Colley, President of the Allied Veterans Association was invited to the Pelican Harbor Base monthly meeting scheduled for 19 June 2004. 3. A picnic and recognition of veterans sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1966 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Pelican Harbor Base holds its monthly meetings at the VFW Post and we wished to demonstrate the appreciation and teamwork submariners are known for. 4. A luncheon and recognition of veterans sponsored by the Coral Ridge Yacht Club in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Commander Vasquez was invited to speak to the Yacht Club in late July. In recognition of their efforts, Commander Vasquez wishes to extend a heartfelt "Bravo Zulu" to all the members of our Pelican Harbor Base - and he invites all USSVI Bases to join him in this recognition. A sincere "Well Done!" is well deserved. =================================================================== ITEM-07 ....
