Valley Base, (Comprising the McAllen, Harlingen and Brownsville

On 29 May 2004 the Memorials to the USS S-27/SS-132 and for all of the
Submarine losses since 1900 were dedicated in the city of Arco, Idaho
near the sail of the USS HAWKBILL SSN-666

On 5 June 2004 members of Bay State West Base attended the launch
ceremony of the USS JIMMY CARTER SSN-23.
Former President Carter, his wife Rosalyn, the ship's sponsor who
christened the ship, and daughter Amy were present at the ceremony at
Electic Boat in Groton,Ct.
The CARTER is the last of the Seawolf class of submarines.
Thanks to all BAY STATE WEST members who represented the base at the
launch.

Our base had a busy Mmemorial Day week. On May 26th we were first
featured in the local newspaper,The Republican, with a story leading
into Memorial Day.The newspaper was doing a series on veterans leading
up to the holiday. It was a center spread in which our members were
interviewed about serving in the Submarine Service.
On May 30th we attended Memorial Day Ceremony in the Town of
Wilbraham,Ma. and the Commander, Nick Ottomaniello was the key note
speaker. He talked about life on a diesel/electric submarine.
On May 31st the base took part in a parade and Memorial Day Ceremony
in the Town of Ludlow, Ma.
We closed out the week on June 6th with taking part in the 350th
Anniversary Celebration Parade for the City of Northampton, MA.

The HOGA was the tug that pushed the USS NEVADA to its final resting
place. This is the next Naval ship that will be part of the Arkansas
Inland Maritime Museum.

I was saving a sail (from USS LAPON SSN-661) to go to the Naval
Academy but they just informed us they are no longer interested in it.
Does anyone know of any organizations etc. who would want it?
Don't have much storage space so I need to make this move out of Puget
soon.
If I can't find a taker shortly I'll have to scrap it.

On May 31, 2004 the Dolphin Base USSVI hosted the Memorial Day program
aboard the USS PAMPANITO SS-383.
Submarine veterans from the San Francisco and Vallejo chapters of
United States Submarine Veterans of WWII, the Dolphin Base, San Jose,
Mare Island Base, Vallejo, Cuttlefish Base, Redding, and the Gold
Country Base, Sacramento of United States Submarine Veterans Inc. were
represented.
Colors were presented by the color guard of the Ticonderoga Base of
the Sea Cadets.
The National Anthem was sung. The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by a
Senior Sea Cadet Petty Officer. CDR Charles E. Wilson, CHC, USN gave
the Invocation.
Elizabeth Kibbey, Chief Executive Officer San Francisco Maritime
National Park Assn. was introduced and gave some remarks.
Special guests: Carl Nolte, staff reporter, San Francisco Chronicle
and author of the book "USS Pampanito: A Submarine and Her Crew;"
Chester Bienlowski, original crew member, who served aboard the USS
Pampanito during World War II, and Charles VerValin, who spent two and
a half years in a POW camp.
CDR Andrew Wilde, USN, Deputy Commander for Engineering Readiness on
the staff of Commander, Submarine Squadron 11, was our guest speaker.
He gave an inspirational speech.
Dom Boncore led the memorial team with the Preamble; Herman Schmidt,
Calling of the Boats; Ralph Foster, Tolling of the Bell; Joe Cox, Flag
Dipper; Silent Partners-Wives, flowers; Bud Burchell, wreath. After
that, additional bell for all hands lost then a moment of silence was
observed. A new part of the program was the POW/MIA ceremony by Bill
Hodges, VVA chapter 400, then came the Benediction by CDR Wilson and
the Navy Hymn by Don Borges. Another new part of the program were
bagpipes with Leonard Sanders and taps by Dennis D'Ambrogio.
After that, came the command "Maneuvering, Conn: Answer Bells on Two
Main Engines." There was moment of silence, then the two main engines
came to life. The Sub Vets came to the waterside to inhale that
familiar smell; after that, came closing remarks and an invitation to
the Sub Vets and guests to have lunch.
