ITEM-08 .... SPRINGFIELD, IL - MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2004
===================================================================
SUBMITTED BY:

USS SPRINGFIELD SSN-761 crewmembers and Submarine Veterans from the
USS Springfield Base (St. Louis) honor and remember our lost
submariners in the traditional 'Tolling of the Boats'. The ceremony, a
part of an entire weekend of events scheduled for the crew, took place
in the Center for the Arts in downtown Springfield.
Loree Riggs and other members of the Springfield Base coordinated this
event filled weekend to bring the USS Springfield and its namesake
city back together after 10 years of absence. Needless to say, the
crew was overwhelmed by the welcome they received and the support they
enjoyed from the entire Springfield community.
American Legion Post 32, the Mayor of Springfield, ILL , the
Commissioning Committee, a local auto dealer and the Quality Inn
downtown were among the many that welcomed and helped sponsor this
"Namesake Cruise" for USS Springfield crew.
Crewmembers were: Commander Pete Miller (CO), LT Aaron Peterson (CRA),
Master Chief Gaylord Humphries (COB), Senior Chief Terry Giese (EDEA),
and Petty Officer David Wolber (Machinist). The Bell was tolled by
Mike Bickel and the ceremony was beautifully narrated by Skip
Turnbull.
The incredible success of this Namesake Cruise has helped forge a
stronger, more meaningful bond with the submarine and the city of
Springfield - one that with the continued support of the community and
the Springfield Base Submarine Veterans will last long into the future
and continue as an annual event. The crew received the Key to the city
from the Mayor along with a congratulations letter from the current
CNO (Chief of Naval Operations), who is also from Springfield ILL.
Needless to say, it was a very memorable weekend for the city, the
crew and all the veterans who participated. More photos and narratives
detailing this event will soon be available on the web at

ITEM-09 .... OZARK-RUNNER BASE MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY
===================================================================
SUBMITTED BY:
CHUCK SHEPHERD bubblehed738@mchsi.com
===================================================================
On Memorial Day 2004 the Ozark-Runner Base of the United States
Submarine Veterans Inc. held their first annual “Tolling Of The Boats”
ceremony. This time honored traditional Navy ceremony pays tribute to
all submarines and crews lost in battle. In keeping with the national
World War 2 Memorial dedicated this Memorial weekend in Washington,
D.C. the Ozark-Runners decided to dedicate their ceremony to all
submarines lost during the years of 1939 to 1945.
The weather once again cooperated and the ceremony took place on
schedule as planned under cool and sunny skies at Nathanael Greene
Park in Springfield, Missouri. The colors of the United States of
America and the Submarine Veterans were magnificently presented,
posted and retired by the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the Naval Sea
Cadets under the direction of Lt. Debbie Gentry along with “America
the Beautiful” wonderfully presented by Miss Luann Turner of
Springfield, Missouri. Fifty-two eulogies accompanied by fifty-two
crisp rings of a ships bell, in honor of each submarine lost, reminded
those present of the ultimate sacrifice given by our brave men during
World War 2. A simple wreath of red white and blue was placed at the
newly erected Nathanael Greene Submarine Memorial by World War 2
submarine veteran and Ozark-Runner shipmate C. O. Tinsley.
Some points to ponder this Memorial Day:
The “Silent Service” is a name given to men who carry out their
missions to protect this country and her interests worldwide and to
not speak of their adventures for fear of harming their fellow
countrymen. “Loose Lips Sink Ships” was a phrase taken seriously, but
due to that dedication, many of their heroic exploits would never be
told. This country owes much to the “Silent Service” and with
ceremonies like the “Tolling Of The Boats” and many others like it
across our great nation the word will hopefully be sent out.
Legendary names like Ned Beach (author of Run Silent, Run Deep),
Eugene Fluckey, and George Street are reminiscent of a day when the
entire world was embroiled in a battle against evil and tyranny.
Following the brutal attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Empire,
they set out to sea against terrible odds and began to set the world
on its ears. These quiet understated men and their machines were less
than 10% of the Navy’s fleet but accounted for over 55% of the enemy
shipping sunk during World War 2.
This Memorial Day was especially poignant, as we not only paid tribute
to our military heroes of the past, but also to our brave men and
women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. George Orwell said it best when
he wrote, “We sleep well in bed because there are rough men who stand
ready in the night to visit violence on those that would do us harm.”
There are those in the world that hate us. They hate us for our love
of our country, they hate us for our comfortable way of life and they
hate us for our steadfast commitment to our friends around the world.
Peace through intimidation is the only way to maintain our way of life
from the Hitler's, Osama's and Saddam's of the world. Our Father's new
it and their Father's knew it. Until we rid the world of such men, we
know it too! As a Navy veteran myself, I for one sleep better at night
with the knowledge that my shipmates are, as we speak, patrolling the
oceans of the world, ever vigilant, keeping the watch.

ITEM-10 .... ERROR IN AMERICAN SUBMARINER PUBLICATION

===================================================================
When the Proposed Amendments to our Constitution and Bylaws were
printed in the latest issue of American Submariner, for some reason
the 'strikethroughs' or 'underlines' illustrating the additions and
deletions to the various PAs were not printed, making it impossible
for the reader to understand the changes proposed.
Fortunately, I am also including a fold out PA brochure with the
mailed ballots (with the proper strikethroughs, etc), so all is not
lost.
Any questions on this, give me a call or email.

Cuttlefish Base has been very active over the past few months. We
have been in two local parades.
First there was the Redding Rodeo parade. We won 2nd place for our
float beating several civic/fraternal/service organizations and other
veteran's entries. It is one of the premier events, of the year, in
this area.
Next we were in the Millville, Ca. "Summer Days" parade. In this
undertaking we scored 1st place for our submarine float. Even better,
we were honored as being the best entry in the parade.
We are also very involved in the soon to be Northern California
Veteran's cemetery. We will have our logo along with the W.W.II logo
on signs in a place of prominence leading to the cemetery.
We are entered in the Weaverville, Ca. 4th of July parade, over in
that historic mountain area.
Lastly; the "Viet Nam Wall replica is here in Redding this week.
Cuttlefish helped sponsor its coming to Redding and several of our
members are volunteering to be of help.
We are surely proud of our members and their spirit.

I'm trying to track down crew members who were aboard the USS NAUTILUS
SSN-571 on its historic August 3, 1958 run under the North Pole.
We have in our collection some philatelic items that were created by
members of the crew. I'm interested in getting background material
from men who were there at the time about what it was like, what they
remember of that historic day, etc.
Are there members in your group who were USS NAUTILUS crew members for
this historic run?
Thank you for your assistance,
Nancy Pope
