Subject: John M. Glass

Dear Mr. Glover,
My name is James Arnold Glass. I am the son of TMC(SS), John M. Glass.
In the mosat recent publication of American Submariner, 2004-02, it
was stated that he is survives by "his nephew's", Mike and Arnold.
Although it is true of Mike, I am his only blood son. He is also
survived by two daughter's, Darlene Glass Larkin and Becky Glass Sena,
a stepson, Larry Pierce. He is also survived by numerous nieces and
nephew's, 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
I have the upmost respect for the career my father had in the Navy. I
framed all his medal's in 1983 as a Father's Day gift to him. Growing
up in the Navy I was aware of his life, and other's, like your own,
and what that great generation did for this country. I will forever be
greatful for the courage, sacrifice, and honorabe way all of you
gallantly fought so I might enjoy the life I have over my 52 years.
Having been a candidate for Annapolis myself, I had a burning desire
to follow in my father's footsteps. I eneded up getting a degree from
Auburn University instead. Life's roads are many and it is because of
that generation we have choices to pursue them.
I am named after one of his brother's that was killed in action at
Guadelcanal in 1942, James Arnold Glass. I have always been proud to
have that small legacy to claim. People from my generation will never
understand what my father's generation did for this great country so
many abuse.
During his 30 year career in the Navy, (1938-1968), he was awarded:
7 Good Conduct Medals
China Service Medal
Navy Occupational Medal
Asiatic-Pacific Medal
American Theater Medal
WWII Victory Medal
American Defense Medal
European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal
National Defense Medal
I write to you because I am proud to be the son of such a man. When my
mother died in 1996 my father came to live with me in LaFayette, Al..
He was not only my father, we were best friends. I not only lost a
father, I lost my best friend; and this country lost a true american
hero. I write to you also to let you know that there are those of us
that understand what you did for the rest of us. I thank you.
My father is buried next to my mother at Barrancus National Cemetary,
Pensacola, Florida. My sister's and I had enscripted on his marker,
"On God's Eternal Patrol".
Pride run's deep.
Respectfully,
James Arnold Glass, son

ITEM-07 .... SUBVETS GROTON BASE TAG-SALE
===================================================================
SUBMITTED BY:
JOHN J. CARCIOPPOLO GUMBA700@aol.com
===================================================================
Shipmates,
On Saturday (19 June 2004) the Memorial Committee (of Groton Base)
hosted a large tag-sale where all of the profits went to the NATIONAL
SUBMARINE MEMORIAL EAST Maintenance and Preservation Fund.
It started with great weather. But then add in many hard working
volunteers, many items donated by the membership for sale, and many
members who came to shop. The results were a huge success. After all
expenses we made $2,034.00.
Well done to all who helped out in this endeavor. Having a tag sale of
this magnitude takes a lot of time and hard work. My sincere thanks to
all who participated or supported this fund raiser. In particular to
Fred and Dolly Stafford and the other members of the Memorial
Committee. Special Thanks also to SUBSCHOOL who provided 15 Students
who were essential in unloading and loading the truck.

ITEM-10 .... TOPEKA-JEFFERSON CITY BASE HONOR-TEAM PATCH
===================================================================
SUBMITTED BY:
ROBERT C. EMERY remery18@comcast.net
===================================================================
See: http://www.ussvi.org/storbase/tjc-hon.jpg
Patch was designed by Robert Emery, a member of our Topeka-Jefferson
City Honor Team, and Honor Team SK.
The patch is 3.185 x 3.185 and sells for $5.00 plus $1.00 for shipping.
All proceeds from the patch will go directly into the base Honor Team
to help defray costs. We have the BC's permission to do all of this.
Our Honor Team is getting very close to being ready to be certified by
the Missouri American Legion us and then grant approval to start doing
military funerals. Our first priority will be Submarine Veterans, then
Navy Veterans, and then Veterans from any branch of the military. Of
course, when called upon to do a funeral, we will not decline any
veteran as long as scheduling permits. We will cover basically the
states of Missouri and Kansas.
We've came a long way since this was first started. We have uniforms
approved, with base help in purchasing, rifles ordered, and we even
have our electronic bugle ordered. Several members of the base donated
money to purchase the bugle. Each Honor Team member is purchasing his
own pants, belt and shoes. The TJC Base is taking care of everything
above the waist, which includes the shirt and everything that goes on
it, the garrison hat, etc. I'd be happy to forward you a photo of the
completed uniform when it is in fact all finished.
It is our feeling here at TJC that the most important thing that we
can do as an organization is to honor those veterans when they sail on
Eternal Patrol. That is our primary responsibility and one that we
take very seriously.
The contact person to order the patch is Robert Emery at:
roberte@optinest.com
If someone wants to order by mail they
can contact Robert at:
