USS Cavalla Base Formed =================================================================== SUBMITTED BY: Art Randall, artrandall@aol.com =================================================================== I am pleased to announce the formation of the USS Cavalla Base on Pelican Island, Seawolf Park, Galveston, Texas, with ten members. Please welcome the following officers of the newest Base in USSVI, the USS Cavalla. The new Base Officers are: Commander: Mike Pullen 1143 E. Brompton Pearland, TX 77584 (713) 436-1940 mpullen@powl.com Vice Commander: John Urbanek ohnurbanek@sbcglobal.net Secretary: Joe Cornelius photolab@wt.net Treasurer: James Worthing jwdw56@juno.com Since Central Regional Director, Art Randall, could not be at the meeting to perform the New Base Launch ceremonies, he asked Bob Fennell, Treasurer of Houston's Triton Base (50 miles from Galveston) to perform the ceremony and the rite of the Launch. Enthusiastically, Bob accepted and with not a trace of Provincialism, he launched the new Base on 11 December, 2004. Moreover several members of the Triton Base, also, committed to mentor the new Base during its formative stages. US Submarine Veterans, Inc., the Central Region, District Five and the members and officers of the new USS Cavalla Base thank Bob for his unselfish and global Shipmate-like view and responsiveness to Base Development. For his participation, Bob will be considered and recognized as an Honorary Plank Owning member of the USS Cavalla Base. Meetings will be held at 10:30 AM on the second Saturday of every month. The first few meetings will be at Seawolf Park and will be held either on the USS Cavalla Submarine Museum, or the Destroyer Escort USS Stewart, depending upon turnout, which is also a museum together with the USS Cavalla sharing Seawolf Park. The members will be looking for other meeting locations, so that they can rotate locations for the ongoing convenience of its members. It is anticipated that the new Base will have a close relationship with the USS Cavalla Museum the Dallas and Triton Bases. Seawolf Park is also the site of the Memorial to the USS Seawolf, the Texas SubVets WWII adopted submarine. All those becoming members of the USS Cavalla Base up to March 31, 2005, are eligible to become USS Cavalla Plankowners. This is a USSVI fund raiser, with all royalty proceeds going to the USSVI treasury. In addition to a detailed history of the first 40 years of USSVI, this commemorative “coffee-table” book will include stories, photographs and personal biographies from you…our members! Biographies are brief vignettes (approx. 150 words) detailing individual military individual histories, with “then and now” photographs. Your help is needed to tell the complete story of submarine veterans… our book will be incomplete without your contributions! The USSVI Commemorative History Book will be a large, 9 x 12 -inch “coffee-table” book with hundreds of pages, bound in a sturdy cover sporting the emblem of the USSVI in gold––the perfect keepsake for all USSVI shipmates and family members––sure to be handed-down from generation to generation. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to record your thumbprint in U.S. Navy History! We also encourage family members and associate members of the deceased to sponsor biographies honoring our fallen comrades. HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO • Submit your 150-word (approximate) personal biography; • Submit two photographs, one military and one current picture; • Write a special memory, assignment or event as they relate to the USSVI or your service as a submariner; • Send any group/action photos, maps, patches or other materials for consideration in the book, with captions (all materials will be returned to you); A detailed brochure in being mailed to all current USSVI Association members, and should be delivered around the first week of January 2005.
