USSVI National Commander Tom Conlon has sent an official letter on behalf of all 11,000 plus members of USSVI supporting the Wisconsin Maritime Museum's request for grant money from the State of Wisconsin. The purpose is to construct a memorial dedicated to all twenty-eight Manitowoc submarines. As one of sixty applicants for the available funds, the museum is not an automatic recipient and the memorial is not a sure thing without support.

The grant request for $40,000 will hopefully be matched by the Wisconsin Maritime in the amount of $60,000, which has yet to be raised. A memorial dedication is tentatively scheduled to take place on the third weekend of 17, 18 and 19 August, 2007 and will coincide with the USS Cobia reunion. The Cobia is the museum boat and it is hoped their crew and boat workforce will join in the dedication ceremonies.

The memorial, to honor the twenty-eight Manitowoc built boats, will be built around USS Rasher's conning tower and her remaining periscope. It will be erected on the Manitowoc shoreline opposite USS Cobia and the museum.

Donations
The Museum has set up a 501c foundation to accept TAX DEDUCTIBLE donations for the project. Donors will receive a letter of receipt to be used for Tax Purposes. All funds collected will be deposited in a RESTRICTED MEMORIAL FUND that cannot be used for any other purpose.

Individuals or boat associations wishing to contribute monetarily to this memorial fund should make their checks out to the USS Rasher Submariners Memorial and send it to the address listed below. (The project identified in the grant request has been temporarily identified as The USS Rasher Submariners Memorial.)

Mr. Bill Thiesen Acting Director/Curator
Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc
75 Maritime Drive
Manitowoc WI 54220-6823

Point of Contact
Until further notice by the museum, the primary point of contact for any feedback regarding the project and the reunion at this time is Dick Traser, former TM3/SS '55/'57 USS Rasher SSR-269 USS Rasher Association and can be reached at submariner@ussrasher.org

There has been a NEW Award Announced this Year for those Bases that have Websites. Its parameters, rules and awards are quite similar to the Newsletter of the Year Award, including the criteria, measurement, size of Base Classes, etc. There are many excellent Websites out there, that deserve to be recognized.

You do NOT have to choose, you may submit a Newsletter for the Base Newsletter of the Year Award AND submit your Base Website of the Year Award.

All you need to do to participate is ask that your Website be reviewed (as outlined in the Website of the Year Award rules, located on the USSVI.org National Awards page, and it will be reviewed by one or more of the five Judges during a period of your choosing (unless you all bunch them in the same time frame, in which case the reviewing of the site will be on a first come first served basis.)

Shipmates of USSVI:

A few weeks ago, the USSVI Board approved the implementation of a new Awards program, that will enhance your ability to involve your Base's support and Recognition of Eagle Scout induction in your community.

We have an emblem which will be made into a patch, award certificates to be presented to the inductees, as well as Award Certificates to the Bases that involve themselves in the program.

The local BSA Troop awards are intended to be used by the Base to make a presentation to the Eagle Scout following his elevation to the rank of eagle Scout at the Court of Honor program. The USSVI Base awards will be presented to those Bases that participated in this program at the National Conventions. Early risers may get a head start now for the Kansas City Convention.

A file found on the USSVI Awards program page
http://www.ussvi.org/awards/top.htm
will provide you with more than you really want to know about the Boy Scout History in England and in the US. But if you are not fully conversant or familiar with the BSA movement, or what the Eagle Scout program entails, or what goes on in a variety of its programs including the Court of Honor you most probably will find it in the file.

We have developed two Certificates for you to present to the Eagle Scout, the choice is yours and I am open to customization (with reasonableness). You can make a great presentation with either of the Certificates I will prepare for you to present to the inductee, as well where you can buy an excellent heavy walnut plaque for the certificate for about $16.00 plus shipping. We have also ordered the USSVI emblems/patches to be available from the National Storekeeper soon which (plaques, certificates and patches are also shown in the file.

This is a low cost opportunity to get USSVI in the Press and word of mouth in the community ... and it won't cost much!

Let me know if you have any questions and I will try to answer them, but I have only had a week on this project myself!

National Awards Chairman
