Help Wanted! ================================================================= Submitted by: Pat Householder ================================================================= Help Wanted! USSVI needs some volunteer grant writers to assist in going after grant money for our SubVets charitable foundation. Because there is a 'learning curve' in this process, having prior experience in grant writing is a definite plus. If you are interested and have experience in this area, please contact: Pat Householder, NJVC householderp@comcast.net Phone: 425 392-0440. Thanks, Shipmates. Pat Householder NJVC ================================================================= Item 03 .... Bill will in turn, send back an email confirmining that you are entered. All bases entering will receive recognition in the AS Magazine and in a POC following the convention. The Awards, including certificates to all bases entering, will be handed out at the 2005 Convention in Kansas City this fall. This is a fun program and is designed to help all bases have more interesting and complete websites. Please submit your email to Bill by May 31, 2005. Judging will continue into June. Please also go to the website page on the USSVI site and look at the many excellent websites there. Scholarship Program CLOSED for 2005 ================================================================= Submitted by: Paul Orstad, National Scholarship Chairman ================================================================= The Scholarship program for this year is closed. I am still get requests for the scholarship applications. We are now in the process of grading 90 plus applications in the high school and college groups. It is advised that you do not try to down load any portion to the scholarship applications as they will be changed for next fall. There were a lot of surprises this year and the biggest was the number of those who down loaded and did not read the cover letter carefully and required extra work for the chair so that every student had a fair chance at the board for review. Also, the Scholarship portion to the PPM will be changed for coming year getting updated. If all goes well we should be done by the first week in July and make our selections final and will get the word out as soon as we can. We know Colleges start in Mid August so we will do our best to get the word out. On behalf of the Scholarship Committee, we thank you for your participation and hope you can follow your dream. ================================================================= Item 05 .... Computer Help Available ================================================================= Submitted by: Bill Lee, sub_ssn589@yahoo.com ================================================================= Computer help is available to USSVI Base Officers via the Lockwood Internet Base School of the Boat - Computers. The link is: http://www.submarinevets.com/~lib/discus/messages/6/6.html?1115702139 Recent topics have included viruses, flash cards, freeware, search tips and much more. ================================================================= Item 06 .... By-Laws and PPM updated ================================================================= Submitted by: John Markiewicz, National Commander, jemjax1@comcast.net ================================================================= The By-Laws and PPM have been updated to fix some typographical errors. USSVI Web Pages updated: http://www.ussvi.org/cb.htm ================================================================= Item 07 .... History of the Submarine Powerpoint Now Available ================================================================= Submitted by: Art Randall ================================================================= Alll who asked for a copy of my "History of the Submarine" powerpoint presentation, it is now available on a PC-compatable CD! Thanks to the technical efforts of Greg "Gunner" Stitz, the USSVI National Webmaster, who dubbed and burned the CDs, the power point driven, full color "History of the Submarine" from Alexander the Great to the USS Virginia is now available on a PC compatible CD. It covers most all of those involved in developing submarines, from those in the 1600s to the two Yale Medical students David Bushnell and Phineas Pratt's Turtle and their attempt to sink the British Flagship HMS Eagle moored near Bedloe's Island in 1776, to the Union's Civil War Alligator, the Confederates' CSS HL Hunley, the "Intelligent Whale," Robert Fulton's Nautilus to the two major competitors, Simon Lake and John Holland, EB's emergence to prominence, through the Diesel Boat days of WWI, WWII, Guppies, Korea, the development and launching of the nuclear submarine Nautilus and much more. Since I have only a limited number to loan, please make a copy of it or download it to your PC and return it to me for others to use. I have given the presentation more than thirty times to all types and sizes of organizations, including USSVI Bases eg: Peoria and Razorback (two times) the DAR and SAR, Kiwanis, Rotary, military organizations, church groups, schools, etc. beginning in 2000 to commemorate our 100th aniversary. It is easy to learn as each major point is "Bulleted," and after a few times giving it (alone or to a group) you will know what to say as you personally styllize each bullet to your own liking. I have given it to fit a 1/2 hour time frame to more than 2 hours... So once you become familiar with it, it becomes a very flexible delivery medium. Send me an e-mail as to when you want it and i will make sure you receive it. I would like the postage reimbursed enclosed in the return envelope returned postage-paid. Newsletter of the Year Award Reminder and News ================================================================= Submitted by: Art Randall ================================================================= ANNOUNCING A REPLACEMENT JUDGE ON THE NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR PANEL Pat Ulman, Past Director of the Eastern Region has agreed to join George Boyle, Ronald L. Martini, Paul Wm. Orstad Jim Terrel, replacing Gordy Clark who could not participatethis year due to commitments to other more pressing issues. ALSO PLEASE REMEMBER TO MAKE SURE YOUR ENTRIES (5 COPIES OF YOUR BEST NEWSLETTER OF 2004-2005) ARE RECEIVED BY ART RANDALL NO LATER THAN CLOSE OF BUSINESS MAY 31, 2005 HIS ADDRESS IS: Art Randall National Awards Chairman 1693 Claymont Estates Court Chesterfield, Missouri 63017 (636) 532-5091 artrandall@aol.com ============= WINNERS OF THE 2005 NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR, PLEASE DO NOT PURGE YOUR NEWSLETTER FROM YOUR SYSTEM UNTIL......... It, just occurred to me, as our Newsletter of the Year Award submission increases its submitters, that once a submission has been judged and the winners, and first and second place runners up are feted with awards and certificates, those that did not win, or receive a runner's up award, are not aware as to why their Newsletter was not a winner or a Runner-up because they never see the Newsletter that caused the Winners and runners-up to be so recognized. To my way of thinking that was and remains an egregious oversight, and with your help it can be easily corrected. I ask that all submitters, of all Classes, if you are a Class winner or were a Class first or second place Runner-up, please keep your submitted newsletter on your system for two-weeks after the awards are presented at the Kansas City Convention. Unless I hear from you to the contrary, I will let all that submitted a Newsletter, but did not win, or did not receive a Runner-up award know of your e-mail address and request that you send them a copy of your winning or recognized newsletter entry. It is so simple a problem to address and will help all submitters see how their Newsletter rated a lesser recognition in contrast to their competitor's entry. I am truly sorry it took this long see ... but better late than never! If the winners and 1st and 2nd place Runners-up will keep their submitted 2005 entry newsletter on file, they can send a copy (all at the same time) to the requesting Base those wanting a copy would be advised of the winners' and Runners-up's e-mail address and those that have requested a copy it can be sent to them all at one time. So if your Base is a Winner or a Runner-up please keep a file for a two week period, for those that want a copy.... then send them a copy and purge your file if you wish after you have sent out a copy to those that requested one. That way those that did not win or receive a 1st or 2nd place Runner up award can see and compare the degree of differences between their submission and the ones that won or were recognized as Runners-Up. Help others to help themselves. It is tough to compete against something if you do not have a clue as to why your Newsletter was not selected as the winner or for a first or second place runners-up recognition award. Thank you for participating and thank you in advance for your help to those that did not win or were not recognized learn from seeing those Newsletters that were deemed to be better than theirs. The bottom line result will be, submitters will be better informed as to why their newsletters were not so feted giving them the opportunity to change their newsletters to be a better competitor for following year, and the final result will be a better Base newsletter for a Base's members and we can all regale in that!
