USS San Francisco Headed to PSNS for Permanent Repairs ================================================================= Submitted by: Pat Householder ================================================================= USS San Francisco Headed to PSNS for Permanent Repairs By Elaine Helm of Kitsap Sun.Com August 1, 2005 USS San Francisco, the nuclear-powered attack submarine that crashed into an undersea mountain near Guam in January, is headed to Bremerton for permanent repairs. A spokeswoman for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard confirmed that the submarine will arrive soon, although an exact arrival date has not been set. One crew member died and nearly 100 were injured Jan. 8 when the San Francisco collided at high speed with a mountain that did not appear on some of the ship's navigational charts. The accident crushed the submarine's bow. After the accident, the sub was towed to Guam, where it underwent $7.5 million in temporary repairs that will enable it to make the cross-Pacific voyage to Bremerton http://www.kitsapsun.com/bsun/local/article/0,2403,BSUN_19088_3969510,00.html ================================================================= Item 03 .... Dedication of USS Robalo Memorial ================================================================= Submitted by: Art Randall ================================================================= Forty-five years in the making, a commitment and a vision became a reality in North Dakota on the afternoon of July 23, 2005. On that day nearly 400 people, representing many interested citizens responding to a front page article regarding the dedication, friends and relatives of the lost men, the remaining members of the North Dakota SubVets of WWII, ND State Commander Jim Brenan and several USSVI representatives, including the Commander of the newly formed USS Robalo Base in Fargo, Robert (Bob) Jacobson. They had gathered in Fargo's beautifully laid out, finely manicured and pristine Lindenwood Park to celebrate, commemorate and dedicate the completed memorial to the USS Robalo and its lost crew of 81 including four captured by the Japanese and assumed to have perished as prisoners of war, as they were never heard from again. Bringing it closer to reality, the dedication was just a few days short of the date the Robalo sank, on the night of July 26, 1944, some 61 years ago, thought to have hit a mine sinking it in minutes. Ten of the eleven remaining North Dakota SubVets of WWII were in attendance coming from all over North Dakota and surrounding states, as well as other locations from even further distances to be a part of this magnificent day ... indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity! For many, if not most, the dedication day was filled with many tearful moments, as the proceedings finally brought closure to the commitment the North Dakota SubVets of WWII made, 45 years earlier. Please see http://www.ussvi.org/news/050830.pdf for text and pictures of this momentous occasion for so many who have been waiting patiently for the vision and the moment to become a reality. I know, I was there as the MC, invited guest speaker and narrator for the Tolling of the Boats.... it was an unforgettable experience for me to share with these ten men their dreams and vision they made so long ago! The thrill was to see their jubilation as it all came to pass, on Saturday, the 23 of July , 2005 and I was there to share it with them. New Book out by a USSVI Member ================================================================= Submitted by: Pat Householder ================================================================= Tales from Da Bronx Submariner (Paperback) New submariner book out by Groton Base member and author Don "MUFF" Kamuf, who takes his readers on a whirlwind tour of his life as a Navy submariner. From his experience growing up in the Bronx and going to Catholic schools,Kamuf joins the U.S. Navy and enters submarine school at Groton Connecticut-a decision that determines his course for the rest of his life. He tells of his experiences serving on USS Bang (SS 385), USS Sea Poacher (SS 406), and USS Abraham Lincoln (SSBN 602), which made patrols in the Atlantic Ocean. After leaving the Abraham Lincoln, Kamuf was sent to submarine school to teach others how to "make air." He then served on USS Dace (SSN 607), making many trips around the world. After that, he worked in submarine repair on USS Fulton (AS 11) and as a planner at the Submarine Support Facility in Groton, Connecticut. Retiring from the Navy, Kamuf was hired by General Dynamics Electric Boat as a construction engineer. This lasted almost twenty years until he retired. In the last chapter, Kamuf tells about his struggles as an alcoholic, the pain, and his eventual triumph. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1587364891/qid=1121352122/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-8157392-5489615?v=glance&s=books ================================================================= |
