"Early Bird" Dues Renewal Program ================================================================= Submitted by Pat Householder ================================================================= Announcing the USSVI "Early Bird" national and base dues renewal program. This is time sensitive: Please make all your "Annual" Base members aware of this program by email forwarding to base members, publishing in Base newsletters and discussing in Base meetings. Start Date: September 1st, 2005 End Date: December 31st, 2005 Purpose: To encourage annual members to renew earlier and for longer periods, both at the national and local level. This program is for current annual members and for new members joining after Sept 1st. Prize: Two Life Memberships will be awarded no later than Jan 15th 2006; one to members who have renewed both base and national dues on or after Sept 1st and no later than December 1st and the second to members who have renewed both base and national dues by December 31st. In other words, the first group gets two chances at the life membership prize. Terms: The National renewal must be for 3 or 5 year terms to qualify and base dues must be renewed at the same time. If the local base offers 3 or 5 year base terms, that renewal term must be made the same as the National Renewal. How it works: Base members must renew national and base membership through your local primary base. Your Base membership chair or other designated Base representative must have the name list and dues payment at the National Office no later than Dec 1st to qualify for the first list drawing and no later than Dec 31st for the second drawing. All listees on the first list will be added to the listees on the second list for the second drawing. MALs must renew national membership through the national office under otherwise similar conditions as explained above. Base membership chairmen take note. Late entries will not be accepted and all entries may be made either by mail or email but the base check with the dues payment included must be received at the National Office by the deadlines. Don't be late because it will be YOU explaining to your Base member why they didn't make the cut. How the winner selection will be handled. On a date to be determined, but not later than Jan 15, 2006 a drawing from the first group will be held at the National Office in front of witnesses for the first winner. When verified, the non winning names from the first group will be added to the second group and a drawing will be made for the second winner in front of witnesses. Following verification, both winners will have their membership records adjusted and they will be notified of their new Life Member status. Decisions of the judges will be final. Thank you to Don Bassler, John Peters, Mike Bircumshaw, Fred Borgmann, John Carcioppolo and Ron Martini for reviewing the program and suggesting improvements. The results will be published in American Submariner and via the POC network. Some Likely Questions and Answers. Q: Why are one year members not included. It's not fair to exclude them! A: This program is designed to increase longer term memberships in USSVI. All one year members are invited to participate. Q: How about my newly joining Base members who sign up for 3 or 5 years during this period? A: I'll include them too, so long as they sign up with the base for the same 3 or 5 year term of membership. Q: What about me, I renewed before Sept 1. A: I expect to roll out the program on Sept 1st, and everyone renewing from that point on will be eligible. Every program needs a finite start point and Sept 1st is the date for this one. Q: What about me? I renewed last year for 3 or 5 years. a: A person who has renewed for multiple years in the past can participate BUT must either extend his current membership term by either three or five years. Q: I am already a National Life member, what do I get? If National Life Members renew their base membership for multiple years, maybe there can be some kind of raffle for them too. A: This sounds like a good program to implement at the base level as an adjunct to the national program. Q: This program is designed to motivate additional non-life members to renew for multiple years during a period of September 1, 2005 and December 31, 2005 only. It is not a program for every member in the organization. That is not a bad thing, but I'm sure some one will criticize that. A: This is a pilot program. If it is successful it will likely be continued in the future. ================================================================= Item 02 .... Scholarship Announcement ================================================================= Submitted by Paul Orstad, National Scholarship Chairman ================================================================= Shipmates, The USSVI National Scholarship Committee is now issuing the call for all high school seniors and college students who are presently in school to apply for the application. We are proud to announce there will be a minimum of 18 scholarships of which one will be worth $1500 in memory of Past National Commander John Fredericks, six $1000 and 11 $750 divided between two groups. There will be additional scholarships, which will depend on the donations we receive through the next year. To all our new Bases Cdrs in the last year or so, our organization has a scholarship program that is design to give some help in paying the college fees, books, lab fees and board and room. We offer, as much scholarship money as there is money available from the shipmates and bases that do the donating. Last year we awarded SEVEN 1000$ scholarships in honor of three bases and honored in memory of a past National Commander. The Bases donated the money (two bases are in memory of a base shipmate) and one from the Officer’s Wives’ Club of Pearl Harbor, HI. In addition we also gave out twenty-two 750$ in two the groups. They are selected on Financial, Academic, Extra-curricular need, Recommendations and expression of a 400-word essay. All are scored each by the USSVI Scholarship Board members. In case of ties the financial needs with be the tiebreaker. Eligibility is as follows: the student sponsors “Must be a member in Good Standing” at a base or a member-at-large (MAL). The sponsor must be “qualified in submarines” or been a “relief Crew member” in USSV WWII group. The student can be the son or daughter, stepchildren, grand children, or a court appointed to a guardian of the sponsor. The Sponsor must be a member of a base or “member at large” (MAL) in “good standing”. Each sponsor standing will be verified by the National office on or about 20 April 2006. Last year we had several sponsors who did not join and there child application was pulled while the board was in session. Also two sponsors were members but their base did not get the monthly report into the National office on time and were almost pulled. The parent of the sponsor will supply a copy of the previous year (2005) 1040 Tax form signed. If not sign it will be returned for signature. The Scholarship Chairman is the only person who will see the tax form and a test your financial records. If the parent wants them return please state that and it will be return gladly other wise the will be destroyed upon announcing the winners for the scholarship in August 2006. Application request will be taken up till March 15, 2006 and must be returned to the scholarship chairman. By postmarked April 15, 2006. The scholarship can be requested in two ways: 1. You can send me your address by email at hogan343@aol.com or by snail mail and tell me if you are a high school senior or a college student. This is important as I sent you a hint sheet, which direct you what we are looking for and filling out the application correctly the first time. 2. Down load from the web page at www.ussvi.org, then highlight scholarship and follow the instructions. You will need Adobe acrobat to down load. Catfish Western Plains base was launched on September 20, 2005 in Gering, Nebraska. A total of six boat sailors attended the first meeting. Columbus Sub Vets - Book Project ================================================================= Submitted by Bernie Kenyon ================================================================= Our Columbus Base shipmate Ken Sewell, author of RED STAR ROGUE, was able to provide us with a few copies for distribution at the Kansas City Convention. The subsequent sale and exposure was an immense success. You can see that our prime position in the one photo was a definite advantage in that regard. For those who might of missed us there and for those who weren't at the convention at all, a double-click on the following will show you why we expect a lot from our project: http://www.redstarrogue.com/index.html Ken will be touring the country with book signing appearances and anything a Base can do to assist him will be most appreciated. Any Subvet who would like to attend a Ken Sewell appearance and mingle with the crowd is most welcome. Wearing a Subvet Vest would be most appropriate. The prospect for a Base to share in the sales of Ken's non-fiction account of the dastardly Russian scheme contained within the book's covers can be accomplished through our "bulk order" proposal. A Base can SAVE 5 to 6 dollars a copy by buying in quantities of 10, or more, for only $17.50 each, plus mailing, which amounts to approximately 48 cents a book and we pay the sales tax. A base can add to its treasury by marketing the book any way they prefer. The bookstore price as you can see in the website is $25.00, plus sales tax and S & H. Purchasing the books at a discount price is easy because anyone and any Base can order directly from our Columbus Base website: http://www.columbusbase.com/ Fraternally yours, Bernie Kenyon Columbus Base of USSVI Columbus, Ohio ================================================================= Item 11 ....
