Ron Martini's 5th On-line Auction to benefit our Brotherhood Fund ================================================================= Submitted by Ron Martini ================================================================= This is to announce the 5th Submarine On-Line Auction. Previous auctions have raised thousands of dollars for the Cavalla, Torsk, and Croaker. The last raised $7000 for assisting in the return of the Razorback to North Little Rock. This auction relies on donation of merchandise from all Submariners and others who are interesting in helping. This year’s work will go to benefit the Brotherhood Fund of the USSVI’s Foundation. The product you donate will be collected, marked, and photographed by Ed Brooks and other members of the Tucson Base. They will also ship the winner bidders their products. Items that bring in the most money are submarine related of course. Valve wheels, nameplates, gauges, etc. Those being in short supply, we will accept other merchandise. Already sent are 30 VHS tapes of first run movies, several boxes of non-fiction unread hardback books of mostly a military nature, a USN Multimeter, a framed picture of a NY Post Front page of a Marine in Iraq, an 18” wooden submarine model by Dan Moss, a “glass Submarine” donated by Gil Raynor, two Seawolf SSN21 mugs, etc. Send merchandise to: Ed Brooks 1517 Eagle Crest Drv. Prescott, AZ 86301-5424 The auction site will be made available after about ½ of the desired number of items are received and pictures put on a Web site. Bidders will bid by email to Ron Martini and results of bidding will be entered s6-8 times/day and more often the last three days of the auction, which will run about 2 weeks. Winning bidders will also be responsible for the postage to them of the item/s they win. 100 % of net will be sent to National USSVI Office attention Brotherhood Fund. This Fund helps submariners in dire need of assistance. The only expenses are packaging outbound from Tucson and postage outbound if it exceeds what we estimate it to be from the winners. *Ron Martini* 1723 Desmet Sheridan, WY ****82801**** 307-674-9847 ================================================================= Item 02 .... 2006 Calendar Now Available ================================================================= Submitted by: Huey Hahn, National Storekeeper ================================================================= The stylish 2006 submarine calendar is now available and it honors our submarine past by featuring the unique submarine conversions, early missle, radar picket and special mission boats following WWII. Featured are two- and four-color photographs of 32 post-WWII submarines. The loss dates of all US submarines are listed along with other historic dates in USSVI and US Submarine History. Certificate Design Service Available ================================================================= Submitted by Art Randall ================================================================= Gentlemen and Shipmates of USSVI: Over the past several years, I have had many requests, as Commander of District Five and then now in the Director of the Central Region to develop certificates for Base Member Recognition, Base Life Memberships, National Life Memberships, Special Thanks to Community Members, those that have given their time to a Base, and/or USSVI, people that have given noteworthy and/or Keynote Speeches, Community officials and donors Base Newsletter Advertisers, among many others. I have also prepared them on special request from other members of USSVI, not a part of the Central Region. It occurred to me that many of our Bases outside of the Central Region may also due to a lack of special computer programs that can develop professional appearing certificates, would also like to do the same for their Base or other members. and/or for members of their community. In other words a tangible expression they can present to the person they wish to recognize for a variety of reasons important to the Base and its members. Effectively immediataely, If any USSVI Base desires a special recognition certificate to be made, and cannot develop one alone, and can give at least a two-week lead time, I will be pleased to provide one or more for them. All I need is: 1. Base Emblem or patch object in JPEG form (I will supply USSVI Logo) 2. Text content for the certificate (I will wordsmith it if desired) 3. Name of person, group or organization/company to be recognized (for person, first name, MI, last name desired. 4. Date certificate is to be presented 5. When certificate should be in the hands of the Base Coordinator 6. Signatures and titles of the USSVI presenters of the certificate (limit2 names) Cost of Certificate is my Out-of-Pocket cost to prepare, nothing more! This is not a business just an attempt to give other Bases in USSVI what I have long offered and given to District Five and the Central Region Bases! We are indeed a single organization with a single purpose! COST TO THE BASE PER CERTIFICATE Certificate $.37 each 8 X11 Envelope $.28 each Two Stamps $.74 (two required) Total $1.39 per certificate received. An example of an "In Grateful Appreciation" certificate created at the request of the Hoosier Base to present to the Keynote Speaker of their 2004 US Submarine Birthday Party can be found at: http://www.ussvi.org/misc/Certificate_of_Appreciation.jpg (276KB jpg file) In Service to the Brotherhood Art Randall Director Central Region National Awards Chairman Holland Club Member 2005 National Convention Chairman ================================================================= Item 07 .... A SubVet Ad for all USSVI Base Newsletters, and Websites ================================================================= Submitted by Art Randall ================================================================= Available immediately to all Bases is a USSVI JPEG Ad that can be customized for any Base Newsletter and/or Website, for recruiting, Base development or Public Relations, awareness program purposes. I developed the Ad, at John Peter's request, to run in the Journal of the Navy League during 2002. The only difference for the purpose of this announcement is it was created to be an example of how it would appear, had it been customized for the USS Oklahoma City Base. Of course, the statistical information in the ad will be updated for 2006. The sample is at: http://www.ussvi.org/misc/USS_Oklahoma_City_Base_Ad..jpg All I need is your . Base name as you want it to appear . Contact Name . Address . Phone Number . E-mail address Art Randall ================================================================= Item 08 .... Would You Like to Have a Sea Scout Program to Complement Your Eagle Scout Program? ================================================================= Submitted by Art Randall ================================================================= I have been asked by several of the Bases that have established their Eagle Scout Award and Recognition program, in which many of our Bases have participated from the Eastern to the Western Regions and have recognized the elevation of many Scouts to the Rank of Eagle “When might we expand to other Scouting opportunities, such as the Girl Scouts and the Sea Scouts?” It altogether fitting to embark upon recognizing other units of the Scouting world, now that we have launched the Eagle Scout Award and have a good sound Base of experience with it to launch another Scout Recognition program. It is also altogether fitting that we as Navy Submarine Veterans support the Sea Scouts as has the US Navy, providing a new venue for our “Ships at Sea” for these Sea Scouts that they might never have gained without our support. We will continue to explore other Scouting Programs, such as the Girl Scout Recognition Programs among others. The Sea Scout program would differ little from the Eagle Scout Program, in that we will provide each Base that becomes involved in their local and/or County, State Sea Scout Program with a “US Submarine Veterans Supporting the Sea Scouts of America” Patch and a framed Certificate to the Award to be determined by the Sea Scout Entity. The highest award for a Sea Scout is Quartermaster, but they may also choose to pursue receiving the Eagle Scout Award before they reach the age of 18. If you wish it, to be, we can be prepared for both. We cam also present the Base with a Community Achievement Award recognizing its support of Sea Scouting along with the Eagle Scout Award. Also in the planning stages is certificate to be presented to the Sea Scout Council for its “Wall of Honor,” If you are interested (Base Commanders Only Please, in Establishing a Sea Scout Program for your Base, please let me know at artrandall@aol.com If there are enough that want a Sea Scout Program, we will implement it! More information, including a prototype patch, and a history of the Sea Scouts is available at: http://www.ussvi.org/misc/Sea_Scout_Program.rtf (2.1MB RTF File) or http://www.ussvi.org/misc/Sea_Scout_Program.pdf (350KB Adobe PDF File) ================================================================= Item 09 .... The USSVI Article and Page Filler Clearing House ================================================================= Submitted by Art Randall ================================================================= As was announced after the Convention, I had committed to all the Editors assembled at the Base Newsletter Breakout Session in Kansas City that we would soon be able to pool our collective resources to share articles, and informative fillers and other newsletter associated information, via a distribution process not unlike the Associated Press and United Press International news distribution Agencies, among others. The Prototype is up and running at: http://www.rontini.com/newsdb.htm, two months ahead of schedule thanks to Ron Martini's technological expertise! If you write an article that you feel would be of value to other US SubVet Base Editors, you are encouraged to submit it to the Website. And those that peruse the Website and feel they can use your copy, they can download it, giving the appropriate author/Base attribution in your Newsletter.. Please go to the site. Once there read the instructions for surfing of the submitted articles and Fillers as well as to how to submit your articles and Fillers to the new USSVI Editors Clearing House Site. You can enrich your own newsletter/Website editorial content, from what others have, as well as enriching theirs from what you have done. It's a win-win for all, in recognition and the transfer of information and article/filler opportunities to your and Other Base memberships. Art Randall Chairman, USSVI Editor's Clearing House ================================================================= Item 10 .... Online Web Map Ideas for Bases ================================================================= Submitted by Pat Householder, NJVC ================================================================= Shipmates, Here is something that may be useful to all Bases. Thanks to Myron Howard's posting on Rontini's BBS, I've established a online web map showing where the Seattle Base members live. I've added those Seattle Base members not having email, and our online Seattle Base members have been invited to self register themselves. You can see the Seattle Base link http://www.frappr.com/ussviseattlebase We've also put a link to the map on our Base webpage. Every Base and every Submarine Association can create a similar (and free) online map for their own purposes. (For example, I've already created another map for USS Chopper Assn.) It may come in handy for ride sharing or other purposes. The member only needs put in their name, zipcode, and a photo if they wish. In the "shoutout" box I suggest your city name, qual boat and yr, and if you are a HC member. If you want to include your telephone number and/or email to make it easier for ridesharing, please do. The point is, you can put whatever you want in the "shoutout' box. To see who is represented by the little 'teardrops', click on it and the identification info will pop up. The map can be enlarged, shrunk or moved, as suits your convenience. There is no cost or other identification involved, but one Base person will have to be the "mapmaster." Hope you like the map and it is useful for your base. _________________ Pat Householder NJVC ================================================================= Item 11 ....
