Item 08 .... 61 Miles of I-335 in KS designated as Submarine Vets Memorial Highway
=================================================================
Submitted by Art Randall, Central Region Director
=================================================================
The Central Region together with the members of the Topeka-Jefferson City Base and its US Submarine Veterans' Highway Committee, together with their dogged determination covering a year and a half are very pleased and proud to announce that the State of Kansas House of Representatives has approved House Bill 295 to designate 61 miles of Interstate 335 from Topeka, Kansas South to Emporia, Kansas.

It will be designated from Highway 470 South of the junction of interstate highway 35 as the United States Submarine Veterans Memorial Highway.

The Central Region's first such accomplishment was the Designation of 54 miles of Missouri Interstate 70 in October of 2004 (also gained through the dogged determination of the members of the Topeka-Jefferson City Base, and its Committee members!

Now that the Central Region will have two United States Submarine Veterans Memorial Highways, one in Missouri the other in Kansas, we are hopeful that other Bases in the Central Region will be equally enthusiastic and doggedly determined to have one or more such Memorial Highways in their States..... only thirteen more to go, and that our success will also have the same affect upon the other States in the US that they too, will have one or more Interstate Highways carrying the name, United States Submarine Veterans Memorial Highway.

If any Base, Member, or District wishes to "Jump Start" their quest for a similar highway in their state, there are several members of TJC that will be more than interested to answer your questions, and give you some insight into what it took for them to have been successfull, and some of the ways you can shorten the cycle from inception to reality.

If interested, you may Contact the TJC Base Commander Bret Cortright,at Bret.Cortright@jocogov.org. and he will put you in contact with the right TJC Base Committee members!

Getting such a designation isn't easy, it's often political, gets tabled for other legislative matters, takes a lot of effort and patience with the legislative process and you will wonder if it will ever become a Bill and then when it is written you will wonder when it will ever come before the legislature. It will, it just takes dedication, time and that dogged determination to not give up! We know, we've been there and so have you with other projects. This one, as one member said with tears streaming down his cheeks, "Seeing this, made all we did so very worthwhile ... it will be seen by millions of people every year, and the sign and its remembrance will last for many years to come!"

Central Region Director

On 15th April 2006, in the Mississippi River City of Cape Girardeau, there is a Pavilion in which a series of large plaques tell the stories and historicity of their River.

Among these now is the story of the Fresh Water Submarines that came down that river from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on their way to New Orleans and then by way of the Panama Canal to Pearl Harbor where they were made ready for their war in the Pacific.
