Item 03 .... Scholarship Winners Announced
=================================================================
Submitted by Paul Orstad, NSC
=================================================================
The USSVI Scholarship Committee is proud to announce the Scholarship winners for the next college year of 2007. In all there were 89 plus applicants. Five applicants were rejected because their scholarship applications were not completed as required. Their scholarship packages were returned to them with a letter of explanation signed by me.

Base Commanders who had students in their base have been notified to see if they can present the Student winners with a check before 15 August 2006. They had to contact me by email by 25 July 2006. THE CHECK MUST BE PRESENT BEFORE THEY HEAD OFF TO COLLEGE. All we ask is that you take a picture of the presentation and send it to the Editor of American Submariner to publicize the presentation and get your base picture in also. All scholarship winners’ checks will be in the mail by 1 August 2006

I do not want the parent or sponsor feel we are holding up the check just to present it to them. If your Base does not meet in August then do not respond, as I will mail out the check to them no later than 1 August 2005. Most colleges will start around the third or fourth week of August. This does not give you much time but I have been getting emails by the students and parents as to when we will be completed and make the announcement. If you’re not sure give me a call (860) 334-6457 (C) or email me.

This year we selected one additional high school senior, due to getting 48 applications. We also received 41 college applications.

We also increased awards as follows:

     John Fredericks PNC Memorial Scholarship Award to $1500.00;

     Groton Base Scholarship Awards to $1250.00 each;

     Bremerton Base “Willie Spoon Memorial Scholarship Award” to $1250.00;

     Perch Base “Gary Patterson Memorial Scholarship Awards” to $1250.00each; And

     Submarine Officers Wives” Club of Pearl Harbor, Scholarship award also to $1250.00.

The remaining Scholarship awards are $900.00.

The Scholarship committee felt we should increase the scholarship awards and choose fewer scholarship candidates. Even though the three Bases and Club donated their share to support the awards we as a committee upped the awards amount so that we can generate more donations from the base and individual shipmates who donate to our USSVI CF Scholarship Fund as a whole.

Certain bases within USSVI directly sponsor and fund annual USSVI scholarships awards. Those bases are Bremerton Base, Groton Base, Perch base and the Submarine Officers’ Wive’s Club of Pearl Harbor, via Bowfin Base. It is in the spirit of our special “Brotherhood” that they chose to make these scholarship available to the entire USSVI membership instead of limiting the awards to just their own, and we appreciate and salute their support to all our children and grandchildren of USSVI members. Well done, shipmates and thank you for your support.

There are a total of 13 winners in the high school group and 12 in the college group of which 10 are previous winners.

The Scholarship Committee would like to congratulate all the applicants as they made it very very difficult to select our winners. We wished we had a pocket of money to give to each and every one of you as you have done very well in school and made us proud. All the winners are listed in alphabetical order and are not necessary the order of first, second and so forth.
